Blog Week 8: 29th June ~ 5th July 2009

Let your boat of life be light, packed with only what you need – a homely home and simple pleasures, one or two friends, worth the name, someone to love and someone to love you, a cat, a dog, and a pipe or two, enough to eat and enough to wear, and a little more than enough to drink; for thirst is a dangerous thing.
(Jerome K. Jerome)

Hello friends,

Just to start on a more serious note and to re-iterate what Valeria has already said, you probably know about the state of emergency declared by the government of the city on Tuesday in light of the swine flu. We would like to make it clear that this is only a security measure that will optimize the use of existing resources at hospitals for us all. In order to prevent the spreading of the virus, winter vacations in schools and universities have been extended and last four weeks from Monday 7th July. As such, most of our community centres will be closed for the next four weeks.

However, this does not mean that the city is undergoing a major crisis or that it has ceased functioning because of a flu (the whole paranoia about the disease has been greatly generated by the media) and we hope that these measures will reduce the probabilities of transmission of the flu during the next few days. We will be having a general volunteer meeting at the VG centre at 5:00pm this Tuesday (7th July) to go through recommended precautions and the possibilities of working in another project if your current one has been affected.

On a lighter note: there is another VG fundraiser this Saturday (11th July), this time on a luxury boat in Puerto Madero, and everyone is invited. Tickets cost $AR50 and can be bought from the VG centre Monday 6th – Friday 10th July (except Thursday) between 2:00 and 6:00pm; a percentage of the entrance fee will go straight to Voluntario Global (20% for boys, 40% for girls). The boat has two floors, VIP terrace, air-conditioning and cloakroom, and is in the heart of Puerto Madero – the address Dique 3 – Puerto Madero, Azucena Villaflor Cossettini. Do check out the Facebook event for more deets and add yourself to the guestlist if you so wish.

See you on Friday and stay healthy!
